Jill Scott's mom Joyce Scott gave birth to Jill on the 4th of April, 1972, located in Philadelphia Pennsylvania. She was raised by her maternal grandparents and mother. The only child she has. Scott studied at her school, the Philadelphia High School for Girls. After graduating, she attended Temple University. At Temple University, Scott had at two different jobs while learning about secondary education. She was hoping to be an English teacher at high school. After 3 years of working as a teacher's aide and studying the possibility to become a high school English teacher came to a halt. Being a poet, she began performing at live poetry recitals. Then she joined with Amir Quest Thompson (of The Roots) to create the group. You Got Me is the outcome of their collaboration. In an Roots concert, she made her debut to be an artist. Then, she began collaborating with musicians like Eric Benet Will Smith or Common. During the Canada tour for Rent, the Broadway musical Rent the Musical, she gained valuable performance experience. She was the very first artist to sign by Hidden Beach Recordings.
